Glossary

Max download speed

This is the maximum speed at which you will be able to download files. Our products come with speeds of either up to 8Mb or up to 16Mb (mega bits per second), which we've abbreviated throughout this site to 'Mb'. The actual speed you experience will be dependent on a number of factors, most importantly the distance your home is from your local BT exchange.

Max upload speed

Although most of the activity taking place on the web will be downloading data, there will be occasions when you will be uploading data. This may be anything from emails with photo attachments to large video files. The max upload speed is the fastest speed that these files can be uploaded onto the internet. Like the download speed, the maximum attainable upload speed will depend on various factors such as distance from exchange.

Usage allowance included

All our business broadband products come with unlimited usage and are subject to a fair usage policy.

Free TalkTime Included

Each Pipex Business Broadband package comes with 500 minutes inclusive monthly TalkTime to all UK numbers starting with 01 or 02. Once these have been used up, you will be charged at the normal great value Pipex call rates as found on our tariff found here

Connection device

In order to connect to the internet, you will need a connection device; either a standard modem router or wireless router. The standard modem router plugs into both your PC and your phone line. The wireless router, still plugs into your BT phone line, enables you to access the internet from anywhere in your office. It also allows up to 6 devices to be connected to the internet at any one time. With our 12 month contracts, we supply a wireless router free of charge. A small subsidiary charge is applicable if a 3 month contract is taken and you want us to supply you with a connection device. Currently this is £25.52 for an Ethernet Router and £34.03 for a WiFi router.

Security

We know how important it is to keep the data on your PC protected from viruses, malware and spyware, which is we supply a 12 month licence of either the award winning Zone Labs Anti-Virus or Security suite package depending on the service you subscribe to. Additional licences for multiple machines may be purchased when you join. Just ask one of our sales agents when you call or select extra licences when you sign up online.

IP address

Each machine connected to the Internet has a personal address known as an Internet Protocol address (IP address). The IP address takes the form of four sets of numbers separated by dots, for example: 123.45.67.80. Standard broadband accounts are normally assigned a dynamic IP address each time a connection to the internet is made. However, if your business needs to use mail servers, web servers provide access to corporate VPN’s, a static IP address is required, which means the same address is used each time you connection is made. All our business packages come with one static IP as default.

Contention Ratio

Contention ratio is the maximum number of connections coming from one of our switches in the BT exchange. The lower the ratio, the less contention or congestion you will experience at peak times and therefore the faster your online experience will be, whether that is surfing, downloading or uploading.

Email address

This is the number of different email accounts you can have with Pipex. We will provide you with an email address in the form: username@dsl.pipex.com. You will have the ability to specify additional email usernames of your choice.

Email storage per mailbox

This is the maximum amount of storage space you can use to store emails before you need to start deleting emails or files from your email account.

Web space

If you want to design and host your own website, this is the amount of inclusive storage space you have included with your account. The larger the space, the more extensive a site you can have.
